Does Expensive Makeup Really Make You Better?

One thing I've learned is this: expensive makeup doesn't automatically mean better makeup.

Saying that I've never used any expensive makeup.

Most people assume that if it costs more, it must perform better. I'm not convinced.

My routine is built almost entirely from budget products. I start with moisturiser, L'Oréal or Nivea for men.. then a cheap colour-correcting moisturiser from Amazon £6 lasts me about 12 months..with greens, reds and purples to even everything out.

Once that's settled, I apply a very cheap creamy Primark foundation, then use inexpensive blush, contour and highlighter with a handful of brushes and sponges.

Add some budget eyeshadow, mascara, a bright red lipstick, Primark lip gloss and finish with a Primark setting spray.

That's it.

No £50 foundation. No designer palette. No £15 setting spray.

Yet the finished result regularly surprises even me.

Watching my youngest daughter get ready for her prom was quite funny.

Like many teenagers, she assumed the more expensive brands had to be better.

Cost us a fortune!!

There was a bit of panic about getting her makeup right, and I couldn't help thinking to myself and saying to my wife, "If only she knew her dad could probably do it."

Of course, I kept that thought between us.

It made me smile because it highlighted something I've realised over the years.

Makeup is far more about technique than the logo on the packaging.

Blending, colour matching, placement, patience and practice matter far more than how much you spent.

Now, I'm not saying expensive products are a waste of money. I haven't used enough premium brands to make that claim.

Maybe they do blend better, last longer or make the whole process easier.

I'd genuinely like to try a full face using higher-end products one day to see if they really justify the extra cost.

Maybe they'll change my mind.

Or maybe they'll simply confirm what I already suspect—that skill matters more than price.

If you've mastered the basics, understand your face and take your time, you can create a look that people would never believe came from products bought during a Primark shopping trip.

Sometimes I look at what I've managed to create with budget makeup and genuinely surprise myself.

Whether that's because the products are better than people give them credit for, or because I've become pretty handy with a brush over the years, I'm not entirely sure.

Perhaps it's a bit of both.

One thing I am sure of is this: confidence doesn't come from the price tag on the makeup. It comes from learning how to use it.

And that's something no luxury brand can sell you.

In this heat a good setting spray is needed or I think makeup would melt off .. recommend doing your makeup with a mirror in the fridge and the fridge door open lol.
