If you want to try to look convinging the wigs important

Getting the right wig isn’t just about hair—it’s about identity, confidence, and how we see ourselves when we look in the mirror.

For crossdressers, it can be the difference between feeling silly and feeling right.

I’ve learned that firsthand.

Over the past 25 years or so, I’ve tried probably ten wigs.

They’ve come in all shapes and shades: black, red, brunette, brunette with blonde highlights, and a variety of blondes.

Some made me cringe, others made me smile—and a few were binned straight away.

When I first started out, I didn’t have a clue what suited me.

My very first wig was a long, straight blonde one—lovingly bought for me by my wife.

It felt special because of where it came from and suited younger me..

Then there was the Marilyn Monroe-style number, which seemed like a good idea at the time but was rubbish… .

I tried shoulder-length cuts, straight and wavy, before finally settling on the look that feels like me.

We picked a wig when I went out in public with my wife a brown with hint of blonde strands which looked OK definitely didn't look life male me.

We also picked out a long wavy wig which was my 2nd which lasted years.. I washed and restyled it a few times but never got it back to its glory.. Hard to do with cheap wigs.

We bought 3 together from a US site called E-Wigs in a deal buy 2 get one free and one out of 3 was OK none of them looked like the wigs on the models on the website.. Not sure I've got the other two or if I binned them I'll have to check up the attic.

My current wig?

Blonde with ombré tones that soften toward the ends.

It’s shoulder length with a gentle wave and a bit more age-appropriate now that I’m older.

It frames my face in just the right way, bringing Davina to life in the mirror.

Confident, stylish, and grounded. And yes—she’s definitely blonde.

The Awkward Bit

Of course, getting to this point wasn’t easy.

I had to pluck up courage having come out to my wife to broach the subject of buying a wig.. My wife got one for me in a fanvy dress shop.

If you’re brave, you might head to a wig shop, try different styles, and get advice.

I admire anyone who can do that. But me?

I’ve never been that brave.

For me, it’s always been online orders—cheap wigs, different cuts, lots of guesswork.

Some wigs look amazing on the screen but turn up shiny, plastic, and completely unwearable and look far from passable.

Others surprise you by looking and feeling far more natural than expected, even at a low price.

Real hair wigs?

I’ve never gone there—they’re expensive, and honestly, I think synthetic has come a long way.

My current wig is synthetic, affordable, and I’d feel comfortable enough wearing it in public.

It gives me the confidence I need without emptying my wallet.

Websites like Temu and Shein now offer really cheap options—great for experimenting without feeling like a disaster is a huge financial loss.

If it’s awful, it’s no big deal.

If it works?

You’ve struck gold.

Once you know your style, it’s easy to stick with it and just replace it every few years.

A small price for something that helps me present as a woman as its all or nothing look good or not at all.

Final Thought

The right wig is like the right dress—it unlocks something inside.

It’s not just about passing or looking good.

It’s about belonging in your own skin, in your own reflection.

So if you're still on your wig journey—keep going.

Laugh at the bad ones, cherish the good ones, and know that your crown is out there.

And when you find it, wear it with pride.

Great advice. Only have the one wig a shoulder length mid brown wavy style. Don’t get to wear it often but it feels great .

It's taken me a while to get one I really like tho also think you have to adapt the wig with your age for the right look

I cannot agree more some wigs just scream at you when you put them on. I always wished I had hair that I could style and it would do as it was told. Even with product no chance I always end up looking like doc Brown in back to the future. I still have a head of hair even at my age but it never does as it is told. I find this is why I like straight wigs as that is a style that works for me.
