I do think that you 'uncanny alley' is a bit harsh as it really does depend on the context of where the crossdressers is and how they look. At a pride event nobody would bat an eyelid at a crossdressers and there are plenty of 'muggles' who go down there out of curiosity and support. Also some of the younger crossdressers can look amazing and to be honest I may not even realise they were actually a crossdresser and not a GG.
Now if Babs from The League of Gentlemen came to pick you up in a cab then you might feel a little 'weirded out'.
And you know what's also interesting - this has made me realise that I could even support a husband in women's clothing IN PUBLIC, if he was just a man in women's clothing. I'd probably be quite chuffed to have the eccentric, interesting hubby about town. I do like to break rules now and again!
But my husband picking up the kids in a wig and fake boobs? Oh dear lord - I'd probably be tempted to have him committed somewhere for his own good lol. But it's a distinct difference in how I feel about the two and the guy just wearing clothes is definitely less weird and threatening than the guy impersonating a woman. I don't think I'd feel any less uncomfortable if he was impersonating a storm trooper at the school gate. There's something about pretence in adults that leaves me cold. I don't entirely know why...
So there you have it. Interesting, isn't it? That's just how I feel of course. Other wives might prefer crossdressers who pass. But I guess I love masculinity too much to ever appreciate that.
They do try and blend in, and I hate that. Realistically, few men pass as a woman so I'd bet MOST crossdressers are clocked by everyone anyway. Again, the 'uncanny valley' kicks in and I'd also bet most people feel a bit weirded out. Now take away the wig, make up, fake boobs etc, and the uncanny valley feeling disappears. People now know they're seeing a man dressed in women's clothing.
People can learn to accept and even appreciate a man in woman's clothing! They will, I'm sure of it.
They will probably never learn to appreciate a man pretending to be a woman. This makes no logical sense. Transsexuals aside, the male crossdresser trying to 'pass' is not doing himself any favours, but it seems to have become the gold standard for 'trannies' everywhere and I think it's a shame. Of course, I suspect my husband would always go the whole hog now because he's wired himself that way. He really wants to fool his own brain into thinking a female is staring back in the mirror. I don't know if he's has a fetish going on there, too, because it's very sexually linked.
But personally, I prefer the bearded guy flexing his fashion choices! Isn't it funny, but I've have a lot less issue being married to you, Katie, than my husband who is like Davina and enjoys freaking me out by trying to look like a woman! lol. You would definitely be the easier option to live with, in my mind anyway! Maybe that's why your wife is cool with it all...
I find your answer interesting. I don't pretend to be a woman. Most of the time I dress I don't wear make up or a wig - in fact quite often I'll still have stubble on my face! (Sorry to horrify you Davina). I enjoy the feeling that the clothes give me without the need to go the whole hog.
I guess thst if I went out in public then I'd probably wear the wig and make up to try and hide - blend in. Isn't that what most people do? Try and blend in with everyone else.
They're all still quite masculine and I didn't find them unattractive. They're not pretending to be women - just men flexing their fashion muscles.
I actually find that quite hot! I don't find crossdressing as a woman hot, at all. I personally think there must be some difference between the two. Or maybe there is no difference, other than the reality that most men who crossdress were never allowed the freedom to flex their fashion muscles and grew up believing that if you wanted to wear pretty/sexy things, you had to be a woman. And so that's what they did, they presented as women...
Maybe crossdressing will just disappear one day, and men with true freedom of expression will be what is left behind?

It depends on your definition of masculinity.
